Acai Berry:The acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) grows as a wild plant on top of many native palm trees in the Amazon Rainforest. It is blackish purple in color and about the size of a grape but with less pulp. The fruit of the plant has been harvested by local farmers for centuries and used to make a healthy and nutritious fruit pulp. It has also historically been used as medicine in Amazonian cultures.

In the past few years the acai berry has become increasing popular outside of the Amazon because of its high nutritional content, which include high antioxidant levels, high vitamin C content, and an abundance of amino acids and omegas. Acai berries may help protect the heart and cardiovascular system, lower cholesterol levels, slow down the aging process, and maintain healthy digestive function.
The acai berry’s increased popularity is due to its advertisement as the new fad in weight loss and anti-aging. Marketers of the products containing acai claim various health benefits but there are no controlled studies backing up any of their claims. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has also not evaluated these products.
blueberries Blueberry: Blueberries are flowering plants with dark-blue, purple or black berries. They are mainly native in North America but they are now commercially grown in Australia, New Zealand and in South America.

Blueberries have a number of nutritional benefits such as being high in antioxidants and having a high content of vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, and other minerals and vitamins.

Much research has been done about the nutritional benefits of blueberries. Researchers at Tufts University analyzed 60 fruits and vegetables for their antioxidant capability. Blueberries came out on top, rating highest in their capacity to destroy free radicals. ( Other studies have shown that blueberries can help improve nighttime vision, protect against macular degeneration, protect against a variety of cancers, and help with digestion.

Which is Better?
Previous to doing the research I thought the acai berry was the “superfood” that all the television shows were claiming and I was ready to go search for them. Now I see that it is equally as good as any other berry. They both have the nutritional content that we all need for a balanced, healthy diet. I would eat acai berries if they were around but I wouldn’t specifically go out looking for them. Why would I when blueberries are available everywhere and are delicious!
