How exercise can control obesity by Melvin Wangkar

Did you know that over one-half of all Americans, approximately 97 million, are overweight or obese ? Obesity is a condition of excess body fat. Obesity can affect any person from young children to older adults. There are many effects of obesity and most are serious such as health problems, emotional problems, and even death. There are many health problems associated with obesity. Type two diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and stroke are all associated with obesity. Obesity is also linked to higher rates of certain types of cancer. Obese men are more likely to have colon cancer, rectal cancer, or prostate cancer . Obese women are more likely to have cancer of the gallbladder, breast, uterus, cervix, or ovaries. There are many other diseases associated with obesity, such as gallbladder disease and gallstones, liver disease, osteoarthritis, gout, pulmonary problems, and reproductive problems in women . The more obese a person is, the more likely he or she is to develop health problems. Death can also be a result of obesity.obesity

Over the last 20 years, video and computer games have become very popular, especially with kids and teens. Thus, instead of going outside to play and exercise, they are staying indoor spending endless hours playing games like Halo and Super Smash Brothers. Seventy-eight percent of Americans don't meet the basic activity level recommendations, and 25 percent are completely sedentary, meaning that they never exercise. These people are the ones that are most likely to be overweight.Television and video games are becoming daily activities for them and they would spend more time playing their games than exercising. It is a far cry from earlier generation children who were not entranced by the new technology of video games and television. Working parents generally prefer their children to stay inside the home when there is no adult supervision for safety reasons. This leads to children spending less time playing outside and doing physical activities and more time staying indoors. Staying indoors leads to sedentary activities such as playing video games and watching television. Indoor activities generally do not burn as much energy as outdoor activities resulting in more energy being retained in the fat cells as fat or more fat cells being reproduced in a child's body. playing games

I believe that in order to help solve this epidemic we need to start educational programs to teach kids to eat healthy and exercise. Some ways we could start include making P.E. a mandatory class, and instead of just teaching kids basic skills for sports like football, basketball, soccer, etc., we should instead change the programs to be based on the individual. A lot of kids just stand around during P.E. instead of being active, so if we can help a person find a sport that they enjoy and can do for the rest of their life, they won't just stand around and will actually enjoy and get into the class. Also in P.E., we should teach children about the benefits of healthy eating and regular exercise. At school, we should also get rid of vending machines, and stop selling unnutritious foods to children at lunch. In place of sodas and chips, we should have juices and salads. What I have said above contributes to creating an environment that promotes nutritious foods and regular physical activity.

People who exercise regularly are less likely to have high blood pressure. Exercise can also affect the blood levels of cholesterol. Part of the benefit of exercise comes from its direct effect on the heart. The amount of work the heart has to do depends on how fast it beats and the level of blood pressure. With regular exercise the heart muscle becomes stronger. It is able to do the same amount of exercise at a lower heart rate, and regular exercise also lowers blood pressure. So the heart does not have to work as hard. Exercise also improves the blood supply to the heart by stimulating the growth of branches of the coronary arteries.Exercise combined with proper nutrition is more effective in controlling obesity .children playing soccer

Thus, with the technology in today's society the problem with child obesity has largely intensified. The management of obesity and overweight in children is an important issue. Before obesity can be treated in children, it would be good to help parents and children be able to identify the risk factors for children who would likely become overweight or obese in adulthood. The parents and children can get a jump on what they need to do to beat this disease. The fight will not be easy but with the encouragement of the family they will be able to beet it together. That way, we can help ensure a safer and healthier future for us and many generations to come. The best way to control obesity is by exercising. It is also best for parents to promote healthy lifestyle to the kids rather than them wasting their time in front of the television. Everyone had a part to combat obesity.
